just that one look he gave me, and i can't stop thinking about it. a complete stranger, mind you. it happened days and days and days ago. puzzling circumstances. i was going back, heading for the stairs. he was going forward. my mind was elsewhere. somewhere. my eyes must have been glazed over. somehow, however, our eyes met. a captured glance. that one moment, but we were just passing by (justpassingby). lugging my heavy backpack. he, heaving that seemingly heavy guitar case.

two steps go by.

i blink, and out of unfounded curiosity, an impulse,
my head turns, and i look back.
my gaze is caught, as his head turns
and he looks back.

very (too) few seconds mixing
of confusion, embarassment, genuine wonder

no words are exchanged
and suddenly he smiles.
i am shaken, and my own smile unfurls

and we move.
he forward.
i backward, turning, to face the stairs.
